Review for Hancock - Rated PG13 (Starring Will Smith and Charlize Theron)

by Arlene Chadwick
Hancock is the best movie I almost didn't see. It was a refreshingly new summer treat that brings a cool breeze through the soul. You will not see another superhero like Hancock anywhere, in print or on the big screen. Besides being the action packed mystery that keeps answering question after question, it is a touchingly warm story about family, belonging and pure love, the kind we need more of in this cold world. The acting was casually stunning including the young Jae Head.
As the story begins, we find a lost but heroic Will Smith crossing paths with a kind hearted everyday guy played well by Jason Bateman. As "Hancock's" story unfolds, with Charlize Theron entering the picture to further complicate things, there are surprises at every turn clueing you in that this is not just another plaster superhero movie being cranked out. Satisfying at every turn, it is hip tangy dessert in an otherwise boring summer plate of average blockbusters. No wonder since opening Tuesday July 8th it has already grossed 100 million. Go see who Hancock is and take home a satisfying lesson in living life to the fullest. Hats off to the writing team of Vincent Ngo and Vince Gilligan and the actors who gave the bones of this story flesh and breath.

Ok...I thought this movie was good, but not nearly as good as the above reviewer made it sound. The previews convinced me into watching the movie, because (like mentioned above) this is obviously not your everyday superhero movie. The thing I didn't like about this movie, is that the first part is sort of...slightly plotless, and then a plot is just randomly dropped in your lap half way through the movie. If they could have arranged the story better or included some other scenes, it would have been much, much more entertaining of a movie...since the idea is brilliant, funny, and entertaining. However...it wasn't quite.
Now don't get me wrong, this movie was good. I loved not knowing exactly why hancock was the way he was, and seeing someone who looked ordinary, with superhuman abilities, but they should have thrown in the main plot a bit sooner. The plot and subplot however was brilliant, and Will Smith played it perfectly...his style of acting from "I Robot" and "I am Legend" of cool-cat bad-ass was all over this. And the way he presented the character might have been most of what made the movie. Much of it was funny and entertaining, and I'd recommend it to most everyone with time to spend on a movie...also probably a good date movie.
